Shadowbrook Capitola Restaurant Reviews

The Shadowbrook Capitola Restaurant is not known for good food to say the least. Their food is average at best, and it’s sad to say you can get the same type of food for a quarter of the price. But the ambiance is pretty cool, so I guess that’s what you pay for. Most people that I speak to say the same thing – that they are genuinely dissatisfied and almost feel robbed when leaving the Shadowbrook Capitola. So if you are going to eat there, don’t say nobody warned you.

You can find all kinds of fake reviews of the Shadowbrook Capitola all over yelp and other sites on the internet. Don’t believe them, they are done by employees. Or go to this restaurant yourself – and see for your own eyes…taste buds…and wallets…or lack of after you eat at this ripoff!

We go here every few months always enjoy it. we have been here most often for

meetings, and they have a great room in the back for small groups. service has always been top-notch and the setting over the valley is quite nice. don’t be a fatty, take the stairs and enjoy the cool night air amid the gardens.

The ONLY thing good about this restaurant is the cable car.  In the past I have been to this restaurant several times and never had a problem until now.  First of all I called to see if they had anything special planned for Easter Sunday as it fell on my Birthday this year. The girl who answered the phone had no idea and further more didn’t have the brains to find out. I made the reservations 3 weeks in advance and asked to be put in the window which did not happen.  They preferred to give it to a family dressed in sweats and jeans WTF!!!  When I told the dimwit it was my Birthday she replied “Would you like a sundae…its complimentary”. I said that would be nice.  When we walked in not one of the hostesses even looked up to greet us.  Our waiter disappeared and we ended up getting better service from the bus boy.  Shadowbrook restaurants in Capitola advertises that they do something special for you Birthday or Anniversary, well if you call throwing vanilla ice cream approx. 3/4 of a scoop with a hep of whipped cream and a bar cherry something special, it was a joke!!!!!  Don’t bother filing out a guest comment card, my sister did and NEVER  heard a thing from them.  I used to love this restaurant, however with their lack of trained staff and their disinterest in responding I will never return, and will definately stop reccommending it to my friends  Management open your eyes!!!!!!

Have been there several times and the food and service is just fabulous!  They have a great filet mignon.  I don’t think there is anything on the menu you could order that wouldn’t be good.  You can wear casual attire and they still treat you like royalty.

Until recently, I hadn’t been to this place in years.  I took my boyfriend and we ate in the Garden Room.  We had the panko crab appetizer that is to die for, a bottle of wine, the most interesting ahi (garnished with mint and cilantro), two amazing deserts a creme filled crepe and the mud pie and of course some after dinner coffee.  The service was so amazing I told the manager that our server was top notch.

If you go to Capitola Restaurants, you have to go here for the food, ambiance, service and the naturally beautiful surroundings!

I had an amazing dinner with my husband at the Shadowbrook. It was so romantic and the food was SPECTACULAR!!!!!! You must try this restaurant out I promise it will be a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!!!!

The atmosphere is wonderful! Beautiful setting to be in night or during the day. The only reason why it was OK is because I expected better service form such a nice restaurant… My father asked the waiter what kind of wine he would recommend and instead of just recommending one he want into 20 questions without really giving any options. My father doesn’t care, he just wanted a suggestion and would order it. Other than our strange waiter everything was wonderful. I would visit again.

I love the Shadowbrook!  I go as often as I can, and it NEVER disapoints. We’ve been  going there for years, we look forward to our Thursdays there because we’re sure to get the  best service, food, and ambiance in Santa Cruz. They remember where we like to sit, and what wines we like with what foods, and generally  treat us like royalty.  I’ve become fond of several of the servers because of the invarialble professional and warm attitude which guides us through the meals without a hitch every time. The food is always excellent, espically the fish. And the atmosphere!  So cozy and sweet, very pretty and not noisy or crowded at all.  The music in the beautiful bar is a treat as is the cocktail menu and the feeling of luxury throughout. If I could bottle the place and maybe even take Matt the server home, I would! Ha, ha, just kidding… about Matt, that is!

I love this restaurant!

My husband and I have been coming here for our wedding anniversary on and off for the past 20+ years. We live 4 hours away but try to plan our anniversary vacations within an hour of Capitola so we can get our Shadowbrook dinner. It is the most romantic and beautiful place. We love riding the trolley down and hiking back up after dinner.

Last time we were there, we had a server named Johnnie who went way out of his way to make our dinner special. The food and drinks were wonderful the service was excellent, it was truly a happy 28th anniversary!

We have never eaten here with our 4 children (that wouldn’t be very romantic) but now that two of our children have grown and married, they love taking their spouses to Shadowbrook for their own romantic dates.

We recommend for your best experience, go early and request a window table that over looks the creek.

This place is magical. Came here with my wife for our anniversary and she was impressed. The location is a bit tricky to find but worth the trip. The scenario is beautiful with a huge floral garden where you can walk down to the restaurant and enjoy the view. If don’t want to walk, you can take their cart like elevator where it descends you down to the restaurant by cable wires. Neat. My wife and I decided to use the cable ride for experience and then after dinner we walked up to the parking lot to enjoy the view and walk off our dinner. The restaurant is huge with many different locations to eat, whether the green house environment, warm cozy fireplace, or bar location…it is a high-end restaurant that will be great for all occasion with all family or friends. Must try their shrimp prawn salad! Great wine collection!

The Crow’s Nest Restaurant Reviews

I really like this place.  Its got a fairly posh feel to it, the ocean view/ breeze is

killer, and the prices are actually much lower than you’d think.  I think the appatizers are better than many of the entrees.  But the best thing they have going is their walnut/ pear/ gorgonzola salad.  Get it and eat it!

I love to go here on a sunny afternoon and sit on the patio. The pear and gorgonzola salad is to die for and so is their smoked salmon appetizer! Great selection of wines, as well beer and other cocktails. Sitting on the patio watching the boats and sipping a cocktail, doesn’t get any better than this!

Could have been 5 stars but……..
While we were waiting for our table (party of 8) to be ready we were upstairs we ordered some drinks.    My wife ordered a particular brand of chardonay and 2 others we were with ordered the house chardonay.   When our drinks “finally” arrived the waitress told my wife that they no longer served that brand and brought her a glass of the house chard instead.    She should have come back and asked first, but didn’t.    We did wait a while for someone to even acknowledge us to order drinks.

That being said, the food was great, the atmosphere was excellent and the views fabulous.   Definately not your typical “tourist trap” kind of place (even though it may look like one from the outside).    Casual but could still elegant if you want a “dress up” night.
Being originally from Cape Cod and used to coastal restaurants with views and great seafood we were very pleased with this place overall and can’t wait for our next trip back to the coast.

Crow’s Nest rocks! Service, food & bev. with great happy hour choices & prices. Upper lounge has choice ocean/beach views from all seats.
Frequented by locals, yet no territorial attitude here! We’ve had dinner and /or lunch or just grog and pub grub in both the (lower-quieter) dining room or the upper lounge & outdoor deck – always had great food and great service. Kudos to Crow’s Nest & staff!

This place is great. Try happy hour upstairs and after 6pm on Tues-Thurs for great deal. Great view. Most fun staff. Service is good enough. Chicken Sandwich. Fish & Choice. Both great. Fish sandwich was better when it was Mahi, not Tilapia. Get some grub and then walk around the harbor!

How does this place only have an average 3 1/2 stars? Probably because it’s target market is family and those wanting a relaxed time. Anyhow, service was fantastic – our waitress must have read my mind. I was sitting in my seat after gulping a hot chocolate wondering if anyone around me had a glass of water and how I was going to get ahold of my waitress before I started feeling like I had cottonmouth –and a glass of water just appears right before me and our waitress said “Here’s your water” I swear to God I never uttered a word about wanting water!
Anyhow, $15 for a well plated, sustainable choice of Alaskan Cod. That tasted delicious yet was just the right amount of food.
We were there for two birthdays yet never announced anything to anyone. (Granted, we did place a reservation and I’m sure the person who set it said we were there for a birthday) Well our server brought out 2 slices of delicious chocolate mousse which the 4 us devoured. Go there for a Bday, the cake is yummy yum.

And, of course, the view is nice. We did at one point think a seagull pooped in one of our beers though as were on the patio. If you have a paranoid fear of being pooped on by seagulls, don’t sit on the patio.

Many reviews are from out-of-towners.  I’m a local, and it is definitely a place enjoyed by many locals, especially in the off-season.  I always enjoy the food, the drinks and the view.  My favorites are the smoked salmon, which they do themselves, and the salad bar.  Their enchiladas rock!
Go to this place on a crowded summer weekend and you’re bound to run into the usual crowds, the usual waits — it’s expected, don’t complain!  Chill out, have a martini, and fill your eyes with the panorama of Monterey Bay.

I went here for my husbands birthday. The restaurant is really pretty inside which is nice for a special event or if you are from out of town. The entire restaurant is made of a dark beautiful wood, most of the restaurant is windows on one side so you can see the ocean. I think If I went back here I would go for lunch on a nice day and sit outside. The salad I had was one of the best caesars I have ever had and my husband loved the extensive salad bar but the good stuff stops there, None of the four of us were particularly blown away by the rest of the food. If your a tourist I would recommend it for lunch but between here and shadowbrook I would go to shadowbrook over this place.

Thai Basil Restaurant Reviews

I went back today and am finding it is my favorite Thai restaurant in the area other than My Thai Beach. I have tried a few in the Santa Cruz area and others in Santa Clara, Milpitas, etc. the Pad Thai is great as are the curries and Panang. They could have been spiced more though. Coconut milk in the Ice Tea! Pleasant change from the usual. But the best Thai is The Old Siam in Sunnyvale!

Alameda, CA

I am a vegetarian and I totally love this place… okay, it has a few downsides, but the food is not one of them, imho! I love, love, love the lunch specials, and dinner specials. Coconut soup, yellow or green curries, fresh spring rolls are all delightful, fresh and perfectly prepared, for my taste. Other than Bangkok West ( a totally different experience) this is my fav. in this area. It has always has fast service, and is perfect for that lunch break or quick dinner. My service has always been quite quick and great!

The downsides… well, the ambiance could use a little help… it’s drafty by the door, and small and you CAN see the products over on the shelves, plus you have to walk through the kitchen to use the little bathroom.. but for that nice fresh food and low prices, I’ll put up with it all.

Aaaannddd, yes, the owner lady is none too friendly but luckily I have had no run ins with her… just your basic service… and I generally don’t look to restaurant staff for personal interaction anyway!

If you want cheap, big portioned Thai food in a touristy setting… you will love this place.

If you want flavorful Thai food that your Thai friends would be proud to share with their families… you will hate this place.

I usually get dragged here by one of my guy friends… dudes seem to LOVE this place… and the best I can figure is that most Santa Cruz guys 1) wouldn’t know the difference between a fried turd and a fried spring roll if their lives depended on it and 2) this place is dirt cheap and bound to fill even the most glutinous male for under $10.

That said, unless your limbs had been hacked off in some freak surf fight down at the Jetty and all you had was a few million Zimbabwean dollars left, I would suggest you get in your vehicle and drive a mile or two in any direction to find an infinitely better Thai restaurant.

*** Amendment : After reading all the reviews here, I have concluded that no one in Santa Cruz has been nice enough to inform the tourists of the Thai gems we do have here. Please see Bangkok West or Sawasadee. This is where you will find the locals ***

When I lived in SC, I loved coming here for lunch. During lunch time (12-2 or so) they have super good lunch deals. You get soup, rice, a spring roll w/ peanut sauce, and curry for under 10$. I was always a fan of the yellow curry with vegetables and no tofu. They are very versatile here and will listen to what you want. My friend who I would eat here with is a rasta and so his dietary restrictions are a bit more inhibiting than my own, but they always accommodated him nicely. The owners used to be moving around the small dining room and I can see why some people would be disturbed by that, but once you are used to it, they are very nice people and it becomes relatively endearing. I’ve never had anything here that I didn’t like, so try it out and you won’t be disappointed.

Do I like Thai Food? Well for the past 3 years I have had it at least once a week and sometimes even two. Did I eat Thai before that? Yes. Am I Thai? No. Have I ever been to Thailand? Not yet. Has my Fianc? Yes? Do I know good food? You bet! Does it have to be authentic? No, it has to taste good.  Am I qualified to give an opinion? yelppers!

So yelpers, I moved from San Diego and away from my all time favorite Thai restaurant, Siamese Basil. I am now in the beautiful city of Santa Cruz searching for that Thai fix replacement. So far in Santa Cruz/Capitola I have been to Sabieng Thai, Thai House, and now Thai Basil.

Can you say, disappointed?
The Thai story of take-out

The first encounter-we wanted Thai and we wanted something new. Based on Yelp we called Thai Basil…no answer and a very generic machine. We called back and a woman said, “I am with customer” and hung up on us. Perhaps an accident…who knows. We waited 10 minutes and called back again, the machine.

So we waited a few weeks and called back this last Wednesday. We ordered our favorite dishes that I order every time, ummm…because they are my favorite.

Order to go
Green curry with shrimp, extra spicy and Yellow curry with chicken (dark meat if they have it) extra spicy.

We go to pick it up. Neat place. Looks like someone’s home with patio furniture. Friendly, cheap and good portions. Two curry’s with 2 rice’s =$19 and some change

Now for the bad-NO FLAVOR! Their green curry was borderline okay and their yellow curry tasted as if they used water instead of coconut milk! And I’m sorry, but did I, did I st-ut-ter when I said, “spicy, extra spicy, spicy spicy” -yes folks, I am persistent about my spice!

However, I am a problem solver! I happen to have on hand yellow curry and green curry paste and coconut milk. So, I made my own sauce and mixed it with theirs. I have Never had to do this is and I always finish at least 3-4 plates (and I am 5’2 110 lbs..love that Thai!), but I had a hard time finishing one until I fixed it up.

So far Thai preferences in order:
1) Thai House
2) Sabieng Thai
3) Somewhere other than Thai basil
4) Maybe Thai Basil on a different chef night…maybe I would probably eat in so I could tell them if it was bad

We haven’t been here since our new arrival (now 7 mth baby girl), but in my SE Asian wife’s opinion, this is the best Thai place in town and most reasonably priced, too.  Since we were there last, they finally expanded from four tables into the adjacent building (it’s still tiny), so we’re looking forward to squeeze the whole fam in there again soon.  After that errant car slammed into the building, they were closed down for a while, and we are happy to see they are back in biz.

As for the food, we love the Angel Wings and fresh spring roll appetizers, great Red Duck Curry, Yellow Chicken Curry, and Pineapple Fried Rice.  We also enjoy the Pad Thai with duck (did I mention before my wife is a duck freak?).

So why not a 5?  Because of the seating issues (at least in the past), the sometimes very temperamental owner.  She can be the sweetest lady at times, and the most unfriendly b#$%^ at other times.  This can also lead to slow and inattentive service.  But it’s a small price to pay for great Thai food.

Tom G.

You know, the food isn’t really bad.  It’s cheap, a bit on the oily side, but not bad.  it’s the service that’s a killer.  We have had downright rude service here.  The owner tries to cook, run credit cards, and take orders all at the same time. and she’s not happy about it, at all.  The final straw was when we waited like 40 minutes for her to run our credit card and walked out not only frustrated but with a parking ticket on our windshield.  do yourself a favor, go up the road to star of siam.

This place was just alright. The pad thai was really saucy for some reason. It wasn’t a bad thing, but a little different than other places. Red curry was pretty good. Nothing amazing, and definitely not worth the 2 hours of horrendously rude service I witnessed and the 30 dollar parking ticket. All metered parking, watch out for the wheelchair cops, they ticket like hell.

However, the service was ridiculous. One lady, who I assume was the owner, was doing practically everything and somehow being really inefficient at it. One guy came in to get some soup to go and was sitting there waiting for it for 20 minutes. Then, when he went to pay, he didn’t know the credit card minimum was 10 dollars and the lady went kind of crazy. She was extremely snappy and rude. The customer seemed very embarrassed and asked to get another order of soup to bring his total up, but the owner told him he couldn’t order it again! She literally told him that she was saving the soup for other customers (there was nobody else in there besides me and my friend). So the guy stood there awkwardly for what seemed like forever with the credit card in his hand. I was tempted to just give him the cash because I felt so bad. This is all while the lady is cooking behind the counter. She gets impatient and says “What you want? You just standing there?”

My friend and I sat there wide-eyed and scared shitless to ask for the check. Don’t get me wrong, I am used to snappy and rude middle aged asian women and I used to work at a Thai restaurant. But her attitude seriously scared me as a customer. Took maybe 45 minutes to finish our meal, but another 30-40 minutes just for her to notice to get us the check. Again, we were the only customers in there. If you can handle erratic and snappy service from a bipolar frowny asian woman, it might be worth it for you.

Thai Food From My Thai Beach

Okay, I’m more a fan of the location which is right on the beach in Capitola. We went when it wasn’t very crowded and got a table right next to the window facing the water. It was warm and the window was open. The food was good and the smell of the ocean breeze added to the experience. It’s a neat little place to go. The service was very nice. I recommend it.

I don’t know what that Bradley guy is talking about, this restaurant is spectacular. His review is way, way, off. First of all the quote saying “the prices are on par with everything else” is a huge fallacy. My Thai Beach is by far the cheapest costing restaurant in the capitola village. The food-amazing! I had the chicken pad thai, and it was the best pad thai I’ve experienced in my life. The service was unbelievable as well. I spoke with the owner for a while and he was a really nice guy. I will definitely go back.

I’m starting to wonder if bradley o ever went in, or looked at the menu for that matter. Take one look at the prices and you will see for yourself, this restaurant does not cost the same as all the other restaurants in the capitola village.

I’m glad there’s finally some good food in capitola that’s not over priced! Thanks guys!!!!

this place great! normally i dont go to the village unless im going out for overpriced drinks, which is sad because their are such beautiful views. but this fairly new restaurant is actually very reasonable with their prices, and the food is delicious. if you havent checked it out, i recommend going their asap!

Wow! And here I thought I did not like Thai food. Well, I love it now, at least at My Thai Beach. Last night, I took group of 15 for a staff appreciation dinner. We choose dishes we could share and this provided a varied sampling of the menu for all including the vegetarians in our group. Each dish was artfully presented, the ingredients local and fresh, the taste and blend of texture superb. We had lamb, bbq beef, salmon fillets, delightful tempura style appetizers, and intriguing Thai soups. The view, well you are an arms length away from the Capitola lagoon and mere steps from the surf. The decor is upscale casual, and anyone will feel comfortable here. The wait staff are professional and personable. And the chef? Hey, I dare you to find better at this particular cuisine on the Monterey Bay. Oh, and the pricing is modest. I’m looking forward to lunches and dinners here in the coming winter months. Get in now before the tourist come back!!!!

Great location. We just ate here yesterday and really enjoyed it. The Green Curry was delicious and so was the Pad Thai. Try to get a window table because it makes the experience that much better. We will go back and are glad to have finally found a decent spot for a good price close to home.
